The fashion industry in Nairobi is growing, and Akiba Studios is at the forefront of the streetwear fashion scene. TAP Magazine sat down with the founder of Akiba Studios, David Kipkoech, where he shares his creative journey and the inspiration behind his brand.
Akiba is a multi-disciplinary visual artist who uses various mediums to tell new African narratives. His journey of creativity began when he was introduced to an art project in primary school. He has always been a connoisseur of fashion and art, and once he started thrifting garments for himself, he began to enjoy the process and fully immersed himself in it.
Akiba founded his brand less than two years ago, and it has grown consistently. He believes that Nairobi is in a position where people are very experimental and expressive, creating an atmosphere for creativity. Running a studio brand takes a lot of work, and he handles production, supervision of tailoring, screen printing, tie-dye, quality control, and managerial tasks.
Akiba's art is based on traditional cultural aesthetics, Afro Futurism, street culture, and science fiction. He tries to make a product that speaks for Kenyan streetwear by using his art techniques as an illustrator to transition into fashion. He infuses all these elements when designing his collections.
As an artist, Akiba recognizes the importance of resources, capital, and equipment to amplify creative journeys. He emphasizes the need for cultural spaces for artists and the importance of collaboration among creators. Artists need resources to build their brands, showcase their films, and exhibit their arts. He is here to inspire and help other artists find a building point and a voice.
Akiba Studios is not just a streetwear fashion brand, but a platform for self-expression, unique lifestyle, music, and art. Akiba's creativity, passion, and commitment to his brand and the art scene in Nairobi are admirable. His brand represents the creative potential of Kenyan fashion and the intersection of fashion and art. We look forward to seeing more of Akiba Studios' collections and the growth of the fashion and art scene in Nairobi.
